The Too Tall Firefighter

Once upon a time there was a young man named Tory.

Ever since he was a little boy, Tory wanted to be a firefighter. He visited fire stations, watched firefighter videos, and read every book about firefighting that he could find.

By the time he was a man, Tory was an expert on firefighters. He knew that a firefighter has to brave, and strong, and good at helping people. And Tory was all those things!

So one day Tory went to the firestation to become a firefighter.

When he got there, a friendly man answered the door. ‘’May I help you?’’ asked the chubby man. ‘’Are you the fire chief?’’ asked Tory.

This made the friendly man laugh. ‘’Why no, I’m just the cook. My name is Arthur. I’ll take you to the chief’’

‘’Yes?’’ said the chief. Tory was nervous, as the chief looked like a very important person.

‘’My name is Tory and I want to be a firefighter. I’m brave, and strong, and good at helping people!’’

The chief looked him over. ‘’You cannot be a firefighter, young man. You are much too tall.’’ This made Tory very concerned. ‘’Too tall? But why?’’

‘’Well,’’ said the chief slowly, as he thought of a good answer. ‘’Firefighters must wear special clothing we call turnout gear to protect us in a fire. And the turnout gear is too small for your very long body. I’m sorry, young man. You cannot be a firefighter.’’

Tory knew all about turnout gear. And he was very sad to learn it was too small for his tall body.

But he had an idea.

The next day, Tory went back to the fire station to see the chief. ‘’Yes?’’ asked the chief.

‘’My name is Tory and I want to be a firefighter. I’m brave, and strong, and good at helping people. And I have my own turnout gear!’’

He did. Tory had gone to a clothing store and bought special firefighter boots, pants, and a coat to fit his long body. Now he could be a firefighter!

‘’I’m sorry, young man, you still cannot be a firefighter. You are just too tall.’’

‘’But why?’’ asked Tory.

‘’Well,’’ said the chief slowly, as he thought of a good answer. ‘”Firefighters must sleep in the fire station so we can be ready for the alarm at any hour. And our beds are much too short for your long body.’’

Tory knew all about firefighter beds. And he was very sad to learn they were too small for his long body.

But he had an idea.

The next day, Tory went back to the fire station to see the chief. ‘’Yes?’’ asked the chief.

‘’My name is Tory and I want to be a firefighter. I’m brave, and strong, and good at helping people. And I have my own turnout gear. And I have my own bed!’’

He did. Tory had gone to a furniture store and bought a special bed that was long enough for Tory’s very long body.

The chief thought for a very long time. And then he said, ‘’I’m sorry, young man, you still cannot be a firefighter. You are just too tall’’

‘’But why?’’ asked Tory.

‘’Well,’’ said the chief slowly, as he thought of a good answer. ‘’I am just too busy right now to answer your questions. Arthur? Please show our visitor to the door.’’

Tory was so sad he almost cried as he walked to the door with Arthur. Why was he too tall to be a fire fighter? He just couldn’t understand it. This made Arthur sad, too.

But then Arthur had an idea.

‘’Do you really want to be a firefighter?’’ asked Arthur.

‘’Yes, I do!’’ said Tory.

So Arthur told Tory his idea, and a few minutes later, Arthur brought Tory back to the chief. ‘’Yes?’’ asked the chief.

‘’I want to be a fire station helper and help keep the fire engines clean. And because I am very tall, I can reach the tops of the engines.’’

The fire chief thought about this. ‘’Well, it is always difficult keeping the tops of our engines clean. Okay! You can be a fire station helper.’’

Tory went to work that very same day. He could reach the tippy tops of the fire engines, even without a ladder, and made every one of them shine with an extra sparkle.

And Tory got to talk with firefighters all the time, and eat the delicious meals that Arthur cooked, and help them get out the door when the alarms went off. He was very happy to work at the fire station.

But still, some times, he wished he could be a firefighter.

Then one day, when all the firefighters were out at a fire, Tory was helping Arthur clean up the kitchen. They were the only two people in the station. Just then, the alarm went off.

‘’Ring!!!’’ They heard a voice over the speakers. ‘’House fire at 114 Primrose Lane! A little boy is trapped upstairs!’’ But all the firefighters were gone! Who would go help the little boy?!

Tory had an idea. ‘’Arthur! Let’s take your truck to the fire!’’

‘’But it’s not a fire truck, Tory! It has no ladders or hoses or anything!’’

‘’But we have to help that little boy! Let’s go!’’

They hopped in Arthur’s truck and got to the house in two minutes. The house was burning, and a little boy was at his bedroom window upstairs, trapped by the fire.

Some neighbors put a ladder up to the wall to get to the boy, but the ladder was too short. Nobody could reach the boy, and the flames were jumping out onto the ladder.

Tory ran up to the neighbors just as fast as he could. ‘’I can reach the boy!’’

And he did. He raced up that little ladder to the tippy top, and stretched his long arms up to the little boy.

‘’It’s okay, little boy. I’m here to rescue you. Just hold on tight.’’

Tory lifted up the boy, covered him with his coat, and very carefully brought him down the ladder. He gave him to his Mommy and Daddy.

Just then, the other fire trucks arrived and began putting out the fire. The fire chief went to the little boy and his parents and learned that he was rescued by Tory.

The chief looked very surprised, and Tory was afraid he was going to be angry. But the chief was not angry. He was very happy.

And he said to Tory, ‘’Young man, rescuing that boy took bravery, strength, and wanting to help people. You are a very good firefighter. Will you please be a firefighter with us?’’

‘’Yes!’’ said Tory.

He ran to the other firefighters and helped them put out the fire.

Finally, Tory was a firefighter – very brave, very strong, and very good at helping people. And very happy, too.
